Police officer charged with attempted murder of woman in hotel appears in court

A serving police officer charged with the attempted murder of a woman in Manchester has appeared in court.

James Riley, 27, appeared before Manchester Magistrates Court this morning following an incident on Thursday (November 10). Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say they were called at around 11.30pm on Thursday to reports of a concern for the welfare of a woman at a hotel on Upper Brook Street, Manchester.

Riley, who is a serving Lancashire police officer, spoke only to confirm his name and address and that he understood the charge made against him. He will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on December 19.

GMP said the woman was taken to hospital following the incident, where she remains in a stable condition. Riley, of Jepps Avenue, Preston, was later arrested and charged with attempted murder yesterday (November 13). He was remanded in custody before his court appearance this morning.

Defending, Mr Ready made no application for bail. Riley was remanded in custody.
