Fire alert issued as wind shifts direction on the fourth day of the extensive Saddleworth moorland fire.

Residents of Meltham are being advised to ensure that their windows and doors remain closed.

Residents living close to a large moorland fire were advised today to shut their windows and doors due to a shift in wind direction. Despite efforts by firefighters over the past four days, multiple hot spots persist in a portion of moorland near Greater Manchester following a significant blaze. Today, as firefighters continued to battle the fire at Meltham Moor near Saddleworth, local residents were urged to take precautions as the wind altered its course, posing a threat to homes in Meltham. At its peak, the fire measured approximately 4km and required the use of ten pumps to extinguish it. Emergency teams have been present at the location off Wessendenhead Road in Meltham for a fourth consecutive day since the initial call on Tuesday morning.

Fire service officials stated on Thursday afternoon that the main fire had been extinguished, but there are still numerous hot spots spread across several kilometers of moorland. Crews are still present at the site this evening.

Providing an update on Friday evening, the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) announced on X: "UPDATE: Due to a shift in wind direction, smoke from the Meltham Moor fire is now heading directly towards the town." "Residents are kindly requested to ensure that their doors and windows remain closed."

The Met Office forecasts a drop in temperatures in the area with the possibility of rainfall overnight. Follow Manchester Today on Facebook, and Instagram. Send your story ideas to Newsdesk@ManchesterToday.org.uk
