Objections have cried out in the town of Middleton

Middleton residents have expressed worries about the conservation of the historic buildings in their town.

Residents in Middleton have raised their concerns following the submission of a planning application by Hopwood Hall College to convert a listed chapel from 1964-1965, designed by Frederick Gibberd. An Application which was recived by Rochdale Council listed the proposal as follows: "Conversion of former chapel to provide education/teaching facility including internal and external repairs and internal works to provide classrooms and associated facilities, alongside external landscaping and the addition of one accessible parking space." Residents in Middleton have voiced their worries about the management of the construction works and the potential damage it may inflict on the surrounding land, including the Grade II* Listed building owned by the Hopwood Family.

Manchester Today interviewed a member of the public who expressed concerns about the proposal. The individual believes it is a poor choice as it could potentially encroach on the border of the old hall, which remains undetermined. Once planning commences, rectifying any boundary overreach would be too late, as Rochdale Council or the College may refuse to address the issue.

Prior to initiating any planning, establishing clear border demarcations should be the primary focus. I oppose this planning application and hope that other Middleton residents will also object. While acknowledging the need to preserve the historic chapel, it is crucial to proceed in the right manner. The current planning application does not align with the appropriate procedures until Rochdale Council and the College gain a better understanding of the boundary implications.
