Major appeal for information launched by detectives heading the investigation of a rape in the city center

A 47-year-old male has been charged with a dozen offences and is currently in custody pending trial.

An appeal for information has been initiated by officers who are investigating reported rapes in the city center. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are actively looking into a number of incidents that reportedly took place in the city center from February to July 2024.

A 47-year-old man named Mourad Malk, residing on Smedley Road in north Manchester, was charged last month with 12 offences. These charges include six counts of rape, sexual assault, and theft, reportedly carried out against three males and one female. Malk is currently in custody awaiting trial. Today, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, GMP has released a public appeal, encouraging individuals who think they might have seen, experienced, or have information about a possible crime to come forward. A Major Incident Public Portal has been established for submitting information.

Detective Inspector Paul Davies from GMP's Major Incident Team said: “Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to those who have already come forward and provided their accounts, they have shown unbelievable courage and bravery.

"We are continuing to support them now and throughout the investigation. I would urge anyone out there who may have witnessed, been a victim of or has any information in connection with these horrific offences to please come forward.

“We are here to listen to you and are committed to obtaining justice and can assure the community that any report received will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in a sensitive manner.

Myself and the team have been in communication with the community and local businesses, providing reassurance and necessary updates.

"We are also working with partners such as St Mary’s sexual assault referral centre, and independent male victim’s charity We Are Survivors to provide victims with the best possible support throughout this investigation”. Duncan Craig from We Are Survivors said: “We are working closely with GMP to support this investigation and we are here for you to speak to us in confidence."
