Residents in Middleton were evacuated last night in a state of shock when the new occupants of a house discovered a collection of war memorabilia in the attic, including what seemed to be a hand grenade.

Emergency services, including the army bomb disposal unit, were summoned to Worcester Road just after 9pm in response to a concerning finding at one of the properties. It is believed that the discovery was made by newly occupants of a property that had been vacant until they moved in. The discovery of the items in the loft led to the emergency services being called out and a number of residents being evacuated.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police told Manchester Today the incident took place in what had been until recently a vacant property. New occupants moved in and they are said to have found war memorabilia as they were clearing out the loft. One of the items appeared to be a hand grenade, said the force spokeswoman.Army bomb disposal officers were called and they examined the device and concluded it was 'not a viable device', according to the force.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Shortly after 9.05pm this evening (Friday 18 August), two fire engines from Blackley and Chadderton fire stations were called to attend an incident on Worcester Road, Middleton. "Crews arrived quickly and worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe before departing after approximately an hour and 15 minutes at the scene."
